The Resilience of Indigenous Peoples to Environmental Change
· 2020. James D. Ford, Nia King, Eranga K. Galappaththi, Tristan Pearce, et al. Elsevier Inc.
· This article helps explain that while these communities are particularly vulnerable to the issue at
hand, their approach of mitigation along with adaptation gives them a sort of resistance that larger
nations lack.
· Additionally, another important point made is that climate mitigation and sustainability require
the combined efforts of an entire community, not just a select few individuals or groups out of an
entire population.
Recognising the role of local and Indigenous communities in managing natural resources
for the greater public benefit
· Case studies from Asia and Oceania region
· 2019. Kamaljit K. Sangha, et al. Elsevier Inc.
· Discusses how despite the effort given to protect indigenous communities from climate change,
little attention is brought to their aid in maintaining the environments and resources that surround
them.
· It also goes into how these peoples care for their land not just out of necessity, but due to their
cultures and beliefs they hold.
Climate change and indigenous peoples: A synthesis of current impacts and experiences
· 2016, Kathryn Norton-Smith, USFS
· ”This synthesis of literature brings together research pertaining to the impacts of climate change
on sovereignty, culture, health, and economies that are currently being experienced by Alaska
Native and American Indian tribes and other indigenous communities in the United States. The
knowledge and science of how climate change impacts are affecting indigenous peoples contributes
to the development of policies, plans, and programs for adapting to climate change and reducing
greenhouse gas emissions. This report defines and describes the key frameworks that inform
indigenous understandings of climate change impacts and pathways for adaptation and mitigation,
namely, tribal sovereignty and self-determination, culture and cultural identity, and indigenous
community health indicators. It also provides a comprehensive synthesis of climate knowledge,
science, and strategies that indigenous communities are exploring, as well as an understanding of
the gaps in research on these issues. This literature synthesis is intended to make a contribution to
future efforts such as the 4th National Climate Assessment, while serving as a resource for future
research, tribal and agency climate initiatives, and policy development.“
· 2013, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Milkweed Editions
· Written by a member of the Potawatomi tribe, this book compares modern scientific approaches
and views to climate change with values and traditions of Native American populations.
· Through this comparison, it not only teaches these traditions, but shows that the knowledge of
indigenous populations still holds value which should be considered in current climate talks.
Indigenous people and environmental justice: The impact of climate change
· 2009, Rebecca Tsosie. Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, Arizona State University
· Challenges common ideas of climate policies made to protect indigenous populations, claiming
that these legislations do more to restrict these groups and their ability to be “environmentally
self-deterministic.”
· Section IV in particular lays out an environmental framework for these populations, establishing
approaches that could aid these populations in adapting to climate change and better communicating
with other nations.
Forum for Development Cooperation with Indigenous People
· Subtitle: Indigenous Peoples, Natural Environments and Climate Changes
· 2008. Forum for Development Cooperation with Indigenous Peoples. Centre for Sami studies,
University of Tromso
· Covering indigenous peoples in both urban and rural environments, this conference report
discusses how these populations suffer more from the effects of climate change than other
populations for a variety of reasons.
· Besides highlighting many issues in terms of climate change and negotiations, this report goes
further by giving several proposals and various insights as to what should be done about these hurdles.
