· “This website was originally created by The Get Bear Smart Society (GBS), one of the original founders

of the Bear Smart program and movement. GBS ceased operations after 27 years in early 2023. During

that time, GBS was a critical catalyst in creating bear smart communities, helping residents to manage

attractants, keeping workers in bear country safe, and encouraging bear managers to choose non-lethal

options. GBS is very proud of inspiring a paradigm shift in the way that humans are choosing to coexist

with bears and other wildlife.... Today, the Get Bear Smart website is maintained by People and Carnivores,

a U.S.-based nonprofit working for the conservation of grizzly and black bears, wolves, and mountain lions.”
